You gotta love this place...
It's the richest province in Canada which is consistently ranked as the #1 country in the world to live — doesn't say much for earth does it!
It's blessed with just 8 months of winter... at least until global warming gets up to speed.
Lot's of "rural" landscapes with lot's of rural unemployment.
There's a great push on to amalgamate every community with any other that's within a day's drive. This appears to be based on the dubious claim that it saves MONEY. I rather suspect it has a lot more to do with power — I think people should be free to "waste" a few bucks on a responsive democratic local government structure — that worked pretty well for over one hundred years! You don't see anyone rushing out to prohibit spending that cash on trendy coffee, sports wear or big fat SUVs!!!
EQUALITY RIGHTS...!
Here in Ontario both men AND women have the legal right to bare their torsos in public. You may wish to peruse the dynamics of this public policy from the... MAMMALWHERE! perspective — then maybe not... if you're not a mammal. Based on my extensive quasiscientific research it appears much more likely that even here in Ontario, you will see women wearing veils — the exact anthropomorphic structural-functional equivalent of the halter top (1K years ago) rather than NOT wearing shirts. (except possibly in at Sandbanks Provincial Park and on the LaSalle Causeway on a sunny sunday in say, late August... )
There's always at least someone who enjoys riding around topless — but never mind about that... Of course our nine months of winter DO NOT encourage extensive display of mammillae — but if you know where to look...
Ontario is open for business — and these opprobrious businesses demand that workers be trained in specialized skills which a decade ago were provided as part of employment for free!
Today, training is sold by predatory opportunistic private schools, colleges and universities which borrow their methods and ethics from the weight-loss charlatans, model agency promoters and talent bureaus to seduce the under and unemployed with propaganda, distorted and over-blown promises of jobs — this training being financed at a very healthy profit from the bloated coffers of the big banks under "student loan" programs — indentured slavery lives through education blackmail and falling middle class income while "CEO" incomes consistently increase at double digit rates!
Workers Compensation changes to eliminate coverage for injury and disease caused by the modern workplace: repetitive stress injury, job related stress — those injuries concomitant with the terrifying, brutal, insecure, stress filled environment of survival of the fittest in the 90's.
Tax cuts for the rich!
Tax increases for the poor through de-indexation of income tax rates, increased CPP rates with a cap or "cutoff ceiling" right where the payments should start to be deducted, tuition, license and "service" fees, user-pay schemes... you get the idea, aimed right at the average working class family.
Some of the most ruthless government policies imaginable which have dictated expensive restructuring which wipes away generations of local identity and local control and ensures services and infrastructure cannot be sustained without crushing hikes in property taxes — achieved through various means.
Our good neighbor to the South — always ready to shut down profitable factories and move production elsewhere so that even more profit is made and more work can be squeezed from each worker.
Highway 401!
Running from Windsor to Cornwall through Southern Ontario, this road is a clever example of what can be done with 50% taxation levels on gasoline. The efficient design of the road features two lanes in each direction with loose gravel shoulders for most of the trip — separated by about 15 feet of grass or a small ditch. This means that you are less than a 1/10 of a second from certain death when anyone makes even a tiny mistake — such as letting a wheel slip off onto the gravel edge. Traffic always moves well above the posted speed limit except during winter or if there is fog — when it appears to go much faster. The killing fields of Ontario (as shown on the right) can be quickly reached from almost any interchange — after all it is the most heavily travelled highway in Canada! Interesting fact: back roads of Northern New York State will have paved shoulders — with traffic flow of ten cars per hour, but not our major highway with more than a hundred times that traffic flow.
